The Mill on the FLoss
By George Eliot
1A. Mary Ann (Marian) Evans, was encouraged to turn from philosophy and journalism to fiction and she subsequently wrote, under the name of George Eliot, Scenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda.
1. “The gentleman, a gentleman rather highly educated for an auctioneer and appraiser, spoke of such acquaintances kindly.”
2. Holy Living and Dying by Jeremy Taylor is a book that is discussed.
3. Of one character writes, “He’s a quiet man — not showy, not noisy.”
4. “If you deliver an opinion, do it with an air of conviction and well-founded knowledge.”
1. Uncle Pullet “kept a variety of lozenges and peppermint drops about his person, and when at a loss for conversation, would say, “Do you like peppermints my friend?”
2. There is one character in the novel who became fascinated by a renaissance painting that uncle Pullet had bought.
3. “We’ll see about it,” was the answer uncle Pullet always gave, “carefully abstaining from any sign of compliance till a suitable number of minutes had passed.”
1. “The contents of the kettle — a stew of meat and potatoes — which had been taken off the fire..." This is a good quote because it suggests that some modern-day "soups" with meat and potatoes should be viewed as stews.
2. "He had noticed remarkable coincidences between these zoological phenomena and the great events of that time, as, for example, that before the burning of the York Minister Bridge there had been mysterious serpentine marks on the leaves of the rose-trees which he had puzzled to know the meaning of."
3. "She took down Baxter's Saint's Everlasting Rest. It was the book she was accustomed to lay open before her on special occasions."
4. In Baxter's book, one of the things that he does is encourage readers, in anticipation of eternal rest, not to become distracted or discouraged by the temporal as he refocuses their minds on the eternal.
5. One character, "found the relation between spoken and written language one of the most puzzling things in this world."
1. Of one character writes, “he had an air of self-confidence inclining to brazenness.”
2. Suggests that you can develop your powers through the medium of Latin and Greek grammar with the application of some sternness.
3. Suggests that one’s knowledge can be “applicable to the everyday affairs of life.”

3. "Maggie was calmly enjoying the free air, while she looked up at the old fir-trees and thought that those broken ends of branches were the records of past storms which had only made the red stems soar higher."
4. "While her eyes were still turned upward, she became conscious of a moving shadow cast by the evening sun on the grassy path before her, and looked down to see Wakem."
5. Philip says, "You are very much more beautiful than I thought you would be."
"Am I?" said Maggie.

21A. Buckland writes that the terrestrial world and the cosmos were created by God. He goes on to explain that it is the moral nature of man that is often examined.

Adam Bede
By George Eliot
Chapter 1
1. Describes Egypt as a land of mysteries.
2. Describes the afternoon sun where a scent of pinewood from a tent like pile of planks mingled with the scent of the elder bushes.
3. Introduces us to the village carpenter Adam Bede, a tall, muscular workman. Bede was a Saxon, with a mixture of Celtic blood.
4. “The face was large and roughly hewn, and when in repose had no other beauty than such as belongs to an expression of good-humored honest intelligence.”
5. The next workman is Adam’s brother, Seth, who aside from slight differences, resembles Bede. Still, it is clear that Adam is the hero here.
6. There is another workman present, Jim Salt, known as Sandy Jim, and, while working, the men joke kindly with one another.
7. A fourth workman is also present, Wiry Ben.
8. The men briefly discuss religion, and the Bible, and one of the Adam mentions that "God put his spirit into the workman as built the tabernacle, to make him do all the carved work and things as wanted a nice hand.”
9. Sandy Jim thanks Adam for his wise speech, and says that that’s the best sermon he’s heard in a while.
10. Mentions that many a preacher has turned an idle fellow into an industrious one.
11. In the village, “the inhabitants had evidently been drawn out of their houses by something more than the pleasure of lounging in the evening sunshine.”
12. Two men speak admirably about meeting Adam Bede, and one of the men says, “we want such fellows as he to lick the French.”
13. Eliot describes the setting, landscape that resembles North America.
14. “He would have seen other beauties in the landscape if he had turned in his saddle and looked eastward, beyond the pasture and green cornfields and walnut-trees; but apparently there was more interest for him in the living groups close at hand."
15. Of the benches and a few chairs that had been placed about a maple tree, “some of the Methodists were resting on these, with their eyes closed, as if wrapt in prayer or meditation. Others chose to continue standing..."
16. One of the women says, “that man of God was Mr Wesley, who spent his life in doing what our blessed Lord did—preaching the Gospel to the poor—and he entered into his rest eight years ago. I came to know more about him years after, but I was a foolish thoughtless child then, and I remembered only one thing he told us in his sermon."
17. “Jesus Christ did really come down from heaven, and what he came down for was to tell good news about God to the poor. Why, you and me, dear friends, are poor. We have been brought up in poor cottages, haven’t been to school much, nor read books, and we don’t know much about anything but what happens to us.”

32. Briefly discusses the love which a man gives to a woman whom he feels to be greater and better than himself. Our still rapture under the influence of autumn sunsets, or pillared vistas, or calm majestic statues, or Beethoven symphonies. It is like a sense of divine mystery.
33. Seth and Dinah were of a very old-fashioned kind.
34. “…they sought for Divine guidance by opening the Bible at hazard.”
1. Lisbeth says, “Have a drop of warm broth.”
2. “Lisbeth had a vague sense that there was some comfort and safety in the fact of his piety.”

12. In this scene, their breakfast was porridge.

14. As they were playing chess, one of the character’s says, “You’ve not won that game by fair means, now, so don’t pretend it.”

24. One of the books discussed is John Moore's Zeluco, a gothic novel. Works by an author with a similar-sounding name include the gothic tales of Le Fanu, such as The Purcell Papers.

26. Arthur hurried to the Hermitage, pitched Zeluco into the most distant corner, and putting his hand in his right pocket, first walked four or five times up and down the length of the little room, then seated himself on the ottoman in an uncomfortable way.
27. Suggests that some people admire you more before you’re married.
28. Hetty begins crying, and Eliot writes, “he must have had eyes of Egyptian granite not to look too lovingly in return.”
29. Of Martin Poyser, writes, “no man judged his neighbors more charitably on all personal matters.”
30. “I’m no friend to young fellows a-marrying afore they know the difference atween a crab an’ a apple; but they may wait o’er so long.”
31. When eating dinner says, “you find fault with your meat, and the fault’s all in your own stomach.”

34. Suggests that a man can only take so much. Quotes Scripture and writes, “she had opened on that memorable parting at Ephesus, when Paul had felt bound to open his heart in a last exhortation and warning.”

3. One of the character’s mentions that she delights in Dutch paintings. She finds in them “a source of delicious sympathy of a monotonous homely existence, as contrasted to a life of pomp or of world-stirring actions.”

A Room of One's Own
By Virginia Woolf
1. “This essay is based on two papers read to the Arts Society at Newnham and the Girton colleges in October 1928. The papers were too long to be read in full, and have since been altered and expanded.
2. “A Room of One’s Own was published at a time when feminist writing was so little in vogue as to be effectively moribund, when the Feminist Movement considered its work finished.”
3. “Woolf is concerned with the fate of women of genius, not with that of ordinary women…her passion is for literature not, universal justice.”
4. “The thesis of A Room of One’s Own—women must have money and privacy in order to write—is inevitably connected to questions of class.”
5. Woolf is essentially saying that genius should be cultivated, and should not be “encumbered by fear, or rancor, or dependency, and without money freedom is impossible.”
6. For Woolf, the writer must be encouraged to write.
7. A writer shouldn’t “write in a rage where she should write calmly. She will write foolishly where she will write wisely. She will write of herself where she should write of her characters.”
8. “Serenity, selfishness, freedom from rage,” these are elements that contribute to great writers.
9. “‘One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well,’ she insists.”
10. Suggests that because of the leisure that their class affords them, the upper class often excels more in writing.
11. Woolf believed that World War I caused a shift in the roles of women, and caused anger in men and consequently a decline in society. Her college, for example, “serves stringy beef, custard and prunes.”
12. This contributes considerably to why women are so poor, and why so few women have written.
13. Woolf indicates that “women are poor because, instead of making money, they have "children…she concludes that if a woman were to have written she would have had to overcome enormous circumstances.”
14. The many factors which make up the experience of women is relevant here.
15. “For Woolf is certain that the experience of men and the experience of women are extremely different, and they need different sentences to contain the shapes of their experience.”
16. “Women’s writing has, in addition, been impoverished by the limited access women have had to life.” For example, she indicates that Tolstoi couldn’t have written had he lived in seclusion.
17. Of two figures writes, “..how natural to think of them as cooperating with one another.”
18. She suggests that, “just as there are two sexes in the natural world, there are two sexes in the mind,” and “recalls Coleridge’s idea that a great mind is androgynous.”
19. This division between the sexes is bad for literature.
20. Thus, unless men and women can be androgynous in the mind, literature itself will be permanently flawed.
21. This is the reason for Woolf’s insistence on $500 a year and rooms of their own for women.
22. “What is important, what is essential, is that works of genius be created. The important thing is that they must express reality; they must express their genius, not themselves. They must illuminate their own souls, but they must not allow the souls to get in the way of reality. For pitted against reality, against the great tradition of immortal literature, the self is puny; it is of no interest.”
23. A Room of of One’s Own came to be written because Virginia Woolf was asked to lecture at women’s colleges on the subject of Women and Fiction. Her interest in the subject was vital. She had felt cheated in her education.
24. There is another reason for Woolf’s writing this piece, she explains, “I wanted to encourage the young women—they get fearfully depressed.”
A Room of One’s Own
25. Woolf writes that she has reached the following conclusion: that “a woman must have money and a room of one’s own if she is to write fiction.”
26. Reminds us that fiction can be used as a tool for social change, to better society.
27. “While visiting a prestigious university, Woolf does a great deal of ruminating.”
28. “…it was in Lycidas perhaps, and Lamb wrote how it shocked him to think it possible that any word in Lycidas could have been different from what it is.”
29. Discusses Thackeray’s Esmond, and indicates that “the affectation of the style, with its imitation of the eighteenth century, hampers one.”
30. Suggests that the impressive architecture at some universities contributes to the success rate of their students, and implies that the reverse is also true.
31. In the chapel of the university she is able to reflect upon her religious beliefs, and in the next scene, she writes, “old stories of old deans and old sons came to mind.”
32. Suggests that many universities were built “on a foundation of gold and silver.”
33. Discusses a luncheon party where Tennyson is read.
33. This luncheon causes her to contemplate whether one could name two living poets as great as Tennyson and Christina Rossetti.
34. Mentions that “the living poets express a feeling that is actually being made and torn out of us at the moment. One does not recognize it in the first place…hence the difficulty of modern poetry,” and admittedly, the cause of quite a bit of frustration.

Chapter Two
54. "What effect has poverty on fiction? What conditions are necessary for the creation of works of art?--a thousand questions at once suggested themselves. 3. Like a general who, in a moment, upsets the plans skilfully laid and prepared by the enemy, the old notary, enlightened by that genius which presides over notaries, saw an idea, capable of saving the future of Paul and his children, unfolding itself in legal form before his eyes.
4. “To save you from being ruined,” replied the old notary, in a whisper. “You are determined to marry a girl and her mother who have already squandered two millions in seven years; you are pledging yourself to a debt of eleven hundred thousand francs to your children, to whom you will have to account for the fortune you are acknowledging to have received with their mother.

On hearing this estimate, which proved to her the lavishness of her husband, Madame Evangelista asked the old Jew whether she should be able to obtain that money immediately.
9. “A good many Portuguese diamonds from Brazil are among them. They are not worth more than a hundred thousand to me. But,” he added, “a dealer would sell them to a customer for one hundred and fifty thousand, at least.”

The Epic of Gilgamesh
1. Acquire a knowledge of Middle Eastern / Arabic literature.
2. In fact the extent and value of the discovery was not realized till later when the clay tablets with wedge-shaped characters were deciphered.
3. Division of the material has complicated the work of decipherment, for in some cases one half of an important tablet has been stored in America and the other in Istanbul, and copies of both must be brought together before the contents are understood.
4. The recent decipherment of the so-called 'linear B' script of Bronze-Age Mycenae and Crete has revealed no literature.
5. They had already irrigated the country and filled it with their cities, before it was conquered by the Semitic tribes in the course of the third millennium.
6. The influence of this gifted people, shown in laws, language, and ideas, persisted long after they had been conquered by their Semite neighbours.
7. In the Sumerian Early Dynastic age each city already had its temples of the gods. They were magnificent buildings decorated with reliefs and mosaics, and usually comprising a great court and an inner sanctuary.
8. So when Gilgamesh calls on the goddess Ninsun, his divine mother, she goes up on the roof of the temple to offer prayer and sacrifice to the great Sun God.
9. 'Gilgamesh and Agga' like the 'Death of Gilgamesh' is known only in Sumerian. It is a detached and not very heroic tale of debate and mild warfare between the rival states of Kish and Uruk.
10. The cause of the quarrel is commercial, and appears to revolve around the barter of oil from Uruk against precious metals, gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and probably building stone from Aratta.
11. Here, in the valleys of the great rivers, he believes that they inherited the civilization and prosperity of the settled inhabitants, who are known to us only by their beautiful pottery and by village settlements of reed-huts and sun-dried brick houses.

There is nothing positive in ideas, which causes them to be called false; but falsity cannot consist in simple privation (for minds, not bodies, are said to err and to be mistaken), neither can it consist in absolute ignorance, for ignorance and error are not identical; wherefore it consists in the privation of knowledge, which inadequate, fragmentary, or confused ideas involve.
21. For instance, men are mistaken in thinking themselves free; their opinion is made up of consciousness of their own actions, and ignorance of the causes by which they are conditioned. Their idea of freedom, therefore, is simply their ignorance of any cause for their actions.
22. Hence it follows that there are certain ideas or notions common to all men; for all bodies agree in certain respects, which must be adequately or clearly and distinctly perceived by all.
23. Some minds can perceive more or different things, than oher minds.
24. For instance, those who have most often regarded with admiration the stature of man, will by the name of man understand an animal of erect stature; those who have been accustomed to regard some other attribute, will form a different general image of man, for instance, that man is a laughing animal, a two-footed animal without feathers, a rational animal, and thus, in other cases, everyone will form general images of things according to the habit of his body.
25. It is thus not to be wondered at, that among philosophers, who seek to explain things in nature merely by the images formed of them, so many controversies should have arisen.
26. He, who has a true idea, simultaneously knows that he has a true idea, and cannot doubt of the truth of the thing perceived.
27. I think I have thus sufficiently answered these questions—namely, if a true idea is distinguished from a false idea, only in so far as it is said to agree with its object, a true idea has no more reality or perfection than a false idea (since the two are only distinguished by an extrinsic mark); consequently, neither will a man who has a true idea have any advantage over him who has only false ideas.
28. Further, no one doubts that we imagine time, from the fact that we imagine bodies to be moved some more slowly than others, some more quickly, some at equal speed.
29. Many errors, in truth, can be traced to this head, namely, that we do not apply names to things rightly. For instance, when a man says that the lines drawn from the centre of a circle to its circumference are not equal, he then, at all events, assuredly attaches a meaning to the word circle different from that assigned by mathematicians.
30. Very many controversies have arisen from the fact, that men do not rightly explain their meaning, or do not rightly interpret the meaning of others.
31. There is in the mind no volition or affirmation and negation, save that which an idea, inasmuch as it is an idea, involves.

34. If it be said that there is an infinite number of things which we cannot perceive, I answer, that we cannot attain to such things by any thinking, nor, consequently, by any faculty of volition. But, it may still be urged, if God wished to bring it about that we should perceive them, he would be obliged to endow us with a greater faculty of perception, but not a greater faculty of volition than we have already.

4. Here the mare halted and he dismounted, shaking the dust of travel from his clothes.
5. At this point a group of men approached him. The king, Buluqiya saw, was seated in a great pavilion surrounded by his troops and his champions, with the jinn kings to his left and right.
6. The king ordered tables to be brought out.
7. Buluqiya saw that Barakhiya maintained the same state as did King Sakhr, and when the food had been fetched he ate his fill, as did the rest of the company, after which he gave thanks to Almighty God. When the food had been removed and the fruit that followed it had been eaten, the king asked him when it was that he had left Sakhr.
8. King Barakhiya told Buluqiya that he had covered the distance of a seventy-month journey in two days, adding: 'When you mounted the mare it was afraid of you, knowing that you were a human, and it wanted to toss you from its back. That was why they loaded it with these two camels." Buluqiya was astonished by what the king told him and he asked him to tell him about his experiences and how he had come to this country.
9. Buluqiya, in return, gave him the full story of his wanderings and of his arrival there, filling with amazement. He stayed there for two months.
10. Karim was astounded to hear the snake queen's story, and he then asked her if she would be kind enough to order one of her servants to bring him out to the surface of the earth so that he might return to his family.

You must know that after his stay with King Barakhiya, Buluqiya took his leave and made his was across open country, travelling by night and day, until he came to a high mountain, which he climbed. There, on top of it, he saw a great angel sitting and repeating the Name of Almighty God, as well as invoking blessings on the Prophet Muhammad.
12. He saw an angel. He had two wings, one stretching out to the east and the other to the west, and when Buluqiya came up and greeted him, he returned the greeting.
13. Hearing this, Buluqiya was filled with wonder, amazed by the angel's shape, the awe that he inspired and his enormous form.
14. When he had taken his leave, he travelled night and day until he reached a vast plain and when he walked on to this he discovered seven rivers and many trees.
15. As he made his way through it he saw a giant tree under which were four angels. He approached them and found when he studied their shapes, that one had human form, while the second was shaped like a wild beast, the third like a bird and the fourth like a bull. They were engaged in reciting the Name of Almighty God, and each of them was saying: 'My God, my Lord and my Master, I implore You by Your own truth and by the dignity of Your Prophet, Muhammad, may God bless him and give him peace, to pardon and forgive all that You have created in my own shape, for You have power over all things.'
16. Buluqiya, filled with amazement at this, left them and walked on night and day until he reached Mount Qaf, to whose summit he climbed. There he saw another enormous angel seated, praising and glorifying God and calling down blessings on Muhammad. He saw that the angel was clenching and then unclenching his hand and folding and unfolding his fingers.
17. While he was doing this, Buluqiya came up to him and, after they had exchanged greetings, the angel asked him: 'What are you? Where have you come from? Where are you going and what is your name?' Buluqiya told him: 'I am son of Adam, belonging to the children of Israel. My name is Buluqiya and I am a wanderer, inspired by love for Muhammad, but I have lost my way.'
18. He went on to tell the angel all that had happened to him and when he had finished, he asked the angel: 'Who are you? What is this mountain and what is this task that is occupying you?' 'Know, Buluqiya,' the angel answered, 'that this is Mount Qaf, a mountain range that encircles the earth, and I hold in my hand every land that God has created in this world. When He intends to visit one of them with an earthquake, famine or fertility, war or peace, He orders me to see to it and I bring it about while still seated here. For you must know that my hand grasps the roots of the earth.'

19. Buluqiya then asked whether God had created on Mount Qaf any land other than the one where the angel was, to which he replied: 'Yes, He has created a land white as silver whose extent is known only to Him and in which He has placed angels, whose food and drink is His praise and glorification and the invocation of blessing after blessing on Muhammad, may God bless him and give him peace.
20. Every night they come and gather on this mountain, and they spend the whole night until morning calling on Almighty God...They will continue to do this until the Day of Resurrection.
21. Buluqiya next asked the angel whether God had created any mountains behind Mount Qaf. 'Yes, indeed,' the angel answered. 'Behind Qaf is a mountain range of snow and ice stretching the distance of a five-hundred-year journey, and it is this that protects the world from the fires of hell, which otherwise would burn it up.
22. Also beyond Qaf are forty lands each forty times as large as this world of ours. Some are of gold, some of silver and some of sapphire, and each of them has its own colour.
23. In terms of strength, everyone has power.
24. Beneath the angel God has set a rock, and beneath the rock he has created a bull that rests on a fish, and beneath the fish a vast ocean. God told Jesus, upon whom be peace, about the fish, and when Jesus then asked to be allowed to look at it, He ordered the angeld to take him to see it.
25. The angel came to Jesus and took him to the ocean where the fish lived, telling him to look. Jesus did so, but did not see the fish until it passes by him like a lightning flash, at which he fell unconscious. When he recovered, God said: 'Jesus, did you see the fish and did you note its dimensions?' Jesus replied, 'I did not see it. A huge bull, three days' journey in length, went past me, but I don't know what it was.'
26. God said, "Jesus, the thing that passed you, three days' journey in length, was merely the head of the bull (that stands on the fish), and you must know that every day I create forty such fish." When he heard that, Jesus marvelled at the power of Almighty God.
27. Then Buluqiya asked the angel what God had created beneath the ocean that contains the fish, and the angel said: 'Beneath the sea is a huge region of air. Under this He has created fire, and under the fire is a giant snake called Falaq, which were it not for his fear of Almighty God, would swallow everything on top of it, air and fire, together with the angel and what he carries, without noticing it.'

29. When God created that snake He used the voice of inspiration to tell it: 'I want to leave a deposit in your charge, so guard it.' When that day comes, God will order his angels to come bringing chains with which they will lead hell to the place of the Last Judgement.
30. On hearing the angel's words, Buluqiya wept bitterly. He then took his leave and went off towards the west until he came on two creatures seated by a great door that stood shut. When he came near, he saw that one of them was shaped like a lion and the other like a bull. He then asked the two what they were and what was the door by which they sat. 'We are the guardians of the door,' they told him, 'and our only concern is to praise and glorify God and to invoke blessings on Muhammad.'
31. Buluqiya wondered at their words and asked them what was on the other side of the door. 'We do not know,' they said, at which he begged them by the truth of their mighty Lord to open it for him so that he could see for himself.' 'We cannot open it,' they said, 'nor can any other created being except for Gabriel, the trusted servant, upon whom be peace.'
32. On hearing this, Buluqiya implored God to send him Gabriel in order to open the door so that he might see what lay on the other side. God answered his prayer and ordered Gabriel to go down to earth and to open the door of the junction.
33. The door could have been a portal either to heaven or to hell.
34. When Buluqiya had gone through, Gabriel locked the door and went back up to heaven. On the inner side of the door Buluqiya found a vast sea, half of which was salty and the other half sweet. The sea was flanked by two mountains of rubies and, when he approached them, he saw three angels engaged in praising and glorifying God.

In the course of his journey he caught sight of a handsome young man who was also walking on the water.
37. He approached the man but left him after they had exchanged greetings. He then saw four angels who were also walking on the sea and moving like flashes of lightning.
38. He asked that the angels tell him their names. The first angel said that his name was Gabriel, and the others were Israfil, Micheal, and Azara'il. Gabriel said, "An enormous serpent has appeared in the east, destroying a thousand cities by God to go and sieze it and then to throw it into hell.'
39. Buluqiya, astonished by the size of the angels, went on his way, travelling as usual by night and day.

40. I have heard, O fortunate king, that Buluqiya reached an island and, when he had walked on it for some time, he came in sight of a handsome young man with a radiant face. This was a religious man who praised god and the Prophet Muhammad.
41. "Sit with me so that I may tell it to you and let you know why it is that I am sitting here."
42. The young man exclaimed: "Poor man, how little you have seen in your life! Know that I have seen King Solomon in his time, as well as innumerable other things."
43. Under him were seven sultans, wealth was carried to him from lands that stretched from the east to the west and he was a just ruler, but although Almighty God had given him all this great empire, he had no son. It was the gift of a son that he wished from God during his lifetime so that after his death his son might succeed him to the throne.
44. The sultan possessed immense wealth: five hundred loads of silk, pearls and other gems, including sapphires, together with gold, silver and precious stones.
45. "You must know that God has granted me the kingdom of Kabul, making me ruler over the Banu Shahlan. This is a vast empire that He has given me; if I marry your daughter, you and I will be equal partners in it and every year I shall send you enough money to meet your needs."
46. When they reach 'Ain Zar, they unloaded what they had brought and all the riders dismounted and greeted one another. For ten days they stayed there eating and drinking, and after that they mounted and set off for the city.
47. The vizier presented him with all that he had brought by way of gifts, together with all the money, and he handed over Tighmus's letter.
48. On his orders the city streets were carpeted and adorned with splendid decorations.
49. Upon the birth of his son, he summoned the wise men, astrologers and almanac experts, telling them that he wanted them to investigate the child's horoscope, checking it against the stars, and to tell him what fortune the boy would encounter in his life.
50. They went out to the open country, and at this point Janshah's path was crossed by a strangely coloured gazelle which took flight in fron of him. They cam to the seashore and rushed at the gazelle, hoping to sieze it, but it evaded them and threw itself into the sea.
51. The men went sailing. They had no set destination, they just sailed in a general direction until they were satisfied. Eventually, the men became lost.
52. When the king learned that his son was missing, he became distraught. He sent his men searching the land, and sent out declarations to nearby islands, asking their rulers if anyone had seen his son.
53. After this, some men went on a journey on land. They reached a spring of running water near which, while they were still at a distance, they could see a man sitting. After they had approached and greeted him, he returned their greeting and spoke to them in a tongue that sounded, to Janshah's astonishment, like the whistling of birds. The man suddenly looked right and left, and, while they were staring at him in surprise, he split into two halves, each of which went off in its own direction. At that point, crowds of people too numerours to count came down from the mountain and, when they reached the spring, they too split in haves and went towards Janshah and his mamluks with the intention of eating them.
54. When the men were searching the land, they saw apes grouped together like a horde of locusts. The men were filled with alarm and terror. At that moment, however, a group of apes came up and, when they were near the throne on which he was sitting, they kissed the ground before him, placing their paws on their chests. Ultimately, the men made friends with the apes.
55. As a result of the curse on the goods, the men became lepers, and grew ugly and wretched.

Janshah rolled up his sleeves and, going up to the mule, he tied the rope around its legs, threw it to the ground and cut its throat with the knife. He then skinned it and cut off its legs and its head until all that was left was a heap of flesh. 'Slit open its belly,' the merchant ordered, 'and then get inside. I shall sew it up and you must stay there for an hour and tell me whatever you see inside it.' Janshah did this and when he had been sewn up inside the mule, the merchant left him and went some distsance off...
9. Some time later an enormous bird swooped down on the mule, snatched it up and flew off to deposit it on the mountain top, intending to eat it. Janshah, sensing what the bird was doing, cut open the mule's belly and came out, and at the sight of him the bird took fright and flew away.
10. Janshah wanted instruction step by step, but the merchant said, "You are in a very rough territory, learn how to do things on your own."

He set out for this valley and walked for some time until he came to a corrie in the mountain through which rain floods drained. 11. When he had made his way into this, he started to investigate, looking to his right and his left, and walking on until he came to a lofty castle towering into the sky.

13. Shaikh Nasr told Janshah, "Our lord Solomon entrusted this castle to me. He taught me the language of the birds, and appointed me as ruler over all the birds in the world. Every year they come to the castle, leaving again after I have inspected them, and this is why I stay here."
14. The Shaikh told him "You are close to Mount Qaf and the only way you can leave here is when the birds come, as I will tell one of them to carry you home. Meanwhile, stay in the castle with me; eat, drink and enjoy yourself looking around its rooms until the birds arrive."
15. It was time for the birds to return. When the shaikh knew that they were about to arrive, he got to his feet and told Janshah: 'Janshah, take these keys and open the rooms in the castle. You may then look at whatever you find, but there is one room which you must take care not to open, and if you disobey me, open it and go in, no good will ever come to you.'
16. Janshah went to all the rooms. When he came to the room that the shaikh forbade him to open, he had the desire to open it. "He stretched out his hand, opened the door of the room and entered. There he found a large pool, beside which was a small pavilion buil to gold, silver and crystal, with windows of sapphires, paved with green chrysolite, hyacinth gems, emeralds and other jewels, set on the ground like pieces of marble.
17. In the middle of the mountain was a golden fountain filled with water, and around the fountain were statues of wild beasts and birds made of gold and silver, with water spouting from their bellies. When a breeze blew, wind would enter the their ears and each would make its own characteristic noise.
18. He went into a pavilion and sat down. While he was sitting there, three birds looking like doves came flying though the air to settle beside the pool. After having played around for some time, they took off their feathers and emerged as three girls, beautiful as moons, without a match in the world.
19. One of the girls began to speak. She said: "You do not know it, but it is a rock to which you have complained.' --I told her: 'Your heart may be a rock, but out of rocks God has made water flow.'
20. The girls burst into laughter when they heard Janshah's lines, and they then played, sang and enjoyed themselves. He brought them fruit and they ate, drank and then slept with him that night until morning, but when morning came they put on their feathered robes, resumed their shapes as doves and flew away. Janshah watched them fly out of sight, and his wits almost took flight with them and he fell down in a faint.
21. In the meantime, Shaikh Nasr came from his meeting with the other birds, and told them to carry Janshah back home. When Nasr failed to see Janshah, he realized that he must have entered the forbidden room. When he had searched everywhere else, he came to the door of this room and found it standing open. He went in and discovered Janshah lying unconscious under a tree. He fetched scented water and sprinkled it over Janshah's face, at which he recovered and began to look around.

1. The woman met a sensitive man, who began to weep.

4. The city itself was splendidly decorated and adorned with ornaments and draperies, while drums of all sizes were beaten in celebration. Expensive brocades were spread beneath the horses' hooves, the state officials showed their joy by producing gifts, and the spectators were dazzled.
5. Food was provided for the poor and needy, the great wedding feast extended over ten days, and Shamsa was delighted by what he saw.
6. The king then sent for the builders, architects and skilled craftsmen and told them to build a palace in the garden there. Janshah, when he learned of what was being done, ordered the craftsmen to fetch a pillar of white marble which they were to hollow out until it looked like a box.
7. When it was finished, the huge palace was furnished, set, as it was, in the middle of the garden with streams flowing beneath it.
8. As she was dressing, she asked the man to pass her one of her dresses, which was sitting on a chair. Then, she put it on.
9. She was a beautiful woman. But beware, although her body may be soft, her heart is harder than solid rock towards her lover.
10. The king went to the merchants and travellers in the city, and asked them about traveling across the globe.

11. The king immediately went out and summoned his four viziers, whom he told to collect all the merchants and travellers in the city and to ask them about Castle Takni. He promised fifty thousand dinars to anyone who knew the place and could direct him to it. 'To hear is to obey,' said the viziers when they heard this, and they went off immediately to carry out his orders, asking the travelling merchants about Takni, but no one could tell them anything about it.
12. They went back to tell this to the king, and when he heard the news he told them to bring beautiful concubines, slave girls who could play musical instruments and singing girls such as were only to be found in royal palaces, in order to make Janshah forget his love for Shamsa.
13. They did as he told them, and he then sent out scouts to explore all lands, islands and climes in order to ask about Castle Takni. These men spent two months on this fruitless task, and when they returned to tell the king of their failure, he wept bitterly.
14. The king had four viziers, together with subordinate kings, nobles, emirs and numerous armies. He ruled over a thousand cities, each with a thousand castles, and he was a great and powerful king whose troops filled the whole land.
15. So the king gathered together his viziersm emirs and state officials and said to them: 'You know that King Tighmus attacked our country, killing my father and my brothers as well as plundering our treasures. Every one of you has lost a relative and had his wealth siezed, his possessions plundered and his family taken captive. I now hear that he is preoccupied with the love affair of his son, Janshah, and has allowed the numbers of his troops to fall.
16. I have heard, O fortunate king, that Kafid, the king of India, ordered his men to ride against the lands of King Tighmus, telling them: 'Prepare to set out, and get ready the equipment we need for an attack on him.'
17. Tighmus now led his men out to meet Kafid and continued his march until the enemy were close by. He then camped in a valley called Wadi Zahran on the border of Kabul territory, and sent a messenger from his army with a letter to King Kafid. In it he had written: 'This is our message to King Kafid. What you have done is the action of a ruffian, and were you really a king and the son of a king you would not have acted like this and you would not have come to my lands, plundering the goods of my people and maltreating my subjects...
18. ...Do you not realize that all this is an outrage on your part? Had I thouhgt that you would dare to attack my kingdom, I would have forestalled you and driven you back from my borders, but if you retreat and abandon the feud between us, well and good. If not, then come out to meet me on the field, and have the courage to stand against me in battle.
19. Having taken the letter, the messenger brought it to King Kafid and, as he approached, he could see tents of dark silk and blue silk flags. In between these tents there was a huge pavillion of red silk, surrounded by large number of guards...
20. ...The messenger went up to it and, when he asked, he was told that this was the pavilion of King Kafid. He looked inside it and saw the king himself seated on a jewel-studded chair surrounded by his viziers, emire and state officials.
21. He came to a field, and met a champion named Barkik. He rode up to Barkik, who called to him. 'My name is Ghadanfar ibn Kamkil,' the rider replied.
22. The men fought furiously, but did each other no real harm.
23. At that another opponent came up, shouting: 'Who are you to kill my brother?' and, taking a throwing spear in his hand, he used it to strike Ghadanfar on the thigh with a blow that drove the mail coat into his flesh. When Ghadanfar saw that, he drew his sword and struck the man such a blow that it cut him in half, and he fell to the ground, weltering in his own blood. Ghadanfar himself then rode back to King Tighmus.
24. This angered him, but Kafid, for his part, found that he had lost six hundred of his bravest riders and that nine of his standards had been broken.
25. There was now a three-day pause in the battle, after which Kafid wrote a letter to a king called Faqun the Dog, a kinsman of his on his mother's side, which he sent off with a messenger from his camp. Faqun, on hearing what was happening, collected his men and set off to join him.

The trick was to make him believe that the house and everything in it belonged to herself.
9. Once married, it would matter little that the truth was discovered, so confident was the lady in the great love of Don Lope; the property would then be returned; and who could blame her, or any woman, for contriving to get an honourable husband, though it were by a little artifice?

11. Their only thought is how to scrape up money and keep it; and to this end they toil incessantly and spend nothing. The moment a real falls into their clutches, they condemn it to perpetual imprisonment; so that by dint of perpetually accumulating and never spending, they have got the greater part of the money of Spain into their hands.
12. But our commonwealth has most wise and zealous champions, who, considering that Spain produces and retains in her bosom such vipers as the Moriscoes, will, with God's help, provide a sure and prompt remedy for so great an evil.

20. That same night I entered the house of a lady of quality, who had in her arms a little lap-dog, so very diminutive that she could have hid it in her bosom. The instant it saw me, it flew at me out of its mistress's arms, barking with all its might, and even went so far as to bite my leg. I looked at it with disgust, and said to myself, "If I met you in the street, paltry little animal, either I would take no notice of you at all, or I would make mince meat of you.
21. "There is no need that we should go over that ground again," said the licentiate. "I admire the art and the invention you have displayed in the dialogue, and that is enough. Let us go to the Espolon, and recreate our bodily eyes, as we have gratified those of our minds."

1. There was a veteran gypsy woman. She had a daughter, and she raised her daughter in such a way as to make her the leader of the gypsies when she reached adulthood.
2. The young gitanas began their dance in the shade, in the Calle de Toledo, and were soon encircled by a crowd of spectators. Whilst they danced, the old woman gathered money among the bystanders, and they showered it down like stones on the highway; for beauty has such power that it can awaken slumbering charity.
3. One of the dancers stood out among the rest, and became a favorite among the crowd.
4. Whilst more than two hundred persons were thus looking on at the dance, and listening to the singing of the gitana, one of the lieutenants of the city passed by; and seeing so many people together, he asked what was the occasion of the crowd. Being told that the handsome gitana was singing there, the lieutenant, who was not without curiosity, drew near also to listen, but in consideration of his dignity, he did not wait for the end of the romance.
5. The dancers had become so popular, they considered constructing a banquet hall exclusively for them. This hall was to include food and drink.
1. Italian Sausage is easy to cook, if you cut the sausage in half, the long way, and then cook it in the frying pan, flipping a couple times, until golden brown. Italian Sausage also tastes good with pasta and sauce on the side.

1. Preciosa went up and looked through the window, which was near the ground, into a cheerful, well-furnished apartment, in which several cavaliers were walking about, and others playing at various games.
2. "If you like to go in, Preciosa," said one of the gitanillas who were with her, "do so by all means; but I do not choose to go where there are so many men."
3. "Look you, Christina," answered Preciosa, "what you have to beware of is one man alone; where there are so many there is nothing to fear. Of one thing you may be sure, Christina; the woman who is resolved to be upright may be so amongst an army of soldiers. It is well, indeed, to avoid occasions of temptation, but it is not in crowded rooms like this that danger lurks."
4. If his romances come to me with this addition, he may transscribe the whole Romancero General and send me every piece in it one by one. I will weigh their merit; and if I find there is good matter in them, I will not reject them. Read the paper aloud, señor, that we may see if the poet is as wise as he is liberal.

23. "Well, we don't want to know it," said one of the gentlemen present; "but God help the lady who trusts her secret to your tongues, and her honour to your aid."
"We are not all bad," replied Preciosa; "perhaps there may be one among us who she can trust. I am the leader of the group."
24. Before she took her leave, she said to Don Juan, "Every day of the week, señor, is lucky for beginning a journey: not one of them is black. Hasten your departure, therefore, as much as you can; for there lies before you a free life of ample range and great enjoyment, if you choose to accommodate yourself to it.

32. In other words, the constitution should remain for a long while in a state of equilibrium thanks to the principle of reciprocity or counteraction.

33. The members of this body were chosen on grounds of merit, and could be relied upon at all times to take the side of justice unanimously.
34. Lycurgus through his powers of reasoning could foresee the direction in which events naturally move and the factors which cause them to do so, and thus made changes accordingly.

It is also their duty to supervise all those affairs of state which are administered by the people; in such cases they summon meetings of the popular assembly, introduce measures and execute the decrees of the people.
38. As for preparations for war and the general conduct of operations in the field, their power is almost absolute. They are entitled to make whatever demands they consider appropriate upon the allies, appoint military tribunes, enrol soldiers and select those who are suitable for service.
39. They also have the power to spend any sum they think fit from the public funds; in this matter of finance they are accompanied by a quaestor, who complies wholly with their instructions. Thus if anyone were to consider this element in the constitution alone, he could reasonably say that it is a pure example of monarchy or kingship.
40. Let us now consider the Senate. This body has control of the treasury and regulates the flow of all revenue and expenditure; the quaestors require a decree of the Senate to enable them to authorize expenditure on any given project, with the exception only of payments made to the consuls.
41. The Senate also controls what is by far the largest and most important item of expenditure -- that is, the programme which is laid down by the censors every five years to provide for the repair and construction of public buildings.
42. Similarly any crimes committed in Italy which require a public investigation, such as treason, conspiracy, poisoning and assassination, also come under the jurisdiction of the Senate.
43. If any private person or community in Italy requires arbitration for a dispute, or is in need of formal censure, or seeks help or protection, it is the Senate which deals with all such cases. It is also responsible for dispatching embassies or commissions to countries outside.
